Since we opened our doors, the people of Nanaimo, through their churches, businesses, service clubs and individually as donors and volunteers, have generously contributed time, energy, financial support, donations and vision to help feed those in need. The sharing and caring of Loaves & Fishes Food Bank got its start in the charity work of the people of St. Paul's Anglican Church and Archdeacon David McKay. The work to create the independent charity of the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank Foundation was begun by Mr. Bill Purdy and Rev. Dawn Braithwaite in 1996. In late 1998 we moved into our present facilities, where God's unconditional love and presence continues to be experienced in wonderful ways. Over the years Loaves and Fishes has relied upon the efforts of many dedicated volunteers and staff members. Through all the changes in our community we have remained dedicated to serving people with excellence and dignity. This has meant that we have had to adapt and evolve to ensure people are receiving the very best possible service. To this end, since 2008 we have opened a total of 9 satellite depots to ensure food is accessible throughout the community. In September of 2013 a hamper delivery program was started for people with medically documented mobility issues. In August of 2012 we launched our highly successful Food 4U Food Recovery Program. This partnership with local grocery stores ensures perishable food that stores are throwing out is not wasted and instead is directed to clients of Loaves and Fishes
